1559451600 Live Music The Mammals. @ Zeeland Street Market Zeeland Street Market June 2, 2019 June 2, 2019 7:00 PM 10:00 PM The Mammals are Ruth Ungar, Mike Merenda, and a cohort of compelling collaborators who form a touring quintet on the fiddle, banjo, guitar, organ, bass, and drums. Identifying as “subversive acoustic traditionalists” or a “party band with a conscience," The Mammals re-emerged from a hibernation period during-which the band’s founders explored new songwriting terrain. “The Mammals don’t suffer from multiple genre syndrome, they celebrate it as if gleefully aware that the sound barriers separating old-timey music, vintage pop and contemporary folk are as permeable as cotton.” - Washington Post "Indeed, The Mammals are all heart, and Sunshiner seems to be packed with ideas about how love will yet win over darkness and fear.” - Kim Ruehl, Folk Alley “The Mammals tell stories that are at once topical and timeless, bearing a message of hope and empowerment with a modern string-band sound.” - FreshGrass Festival "Some of the best folk-rock music you will ever hear.” - TapeOp Magazine "The Mammals are better than ever." - Berkshire Eagle “Some of the best songwriting of their generation.” - LA Weekly
1559970000 Live Music Caleb Elliott & Kristin Diable Zeeland Street Market June 8, 2019 June 8, 2019 7:00 PM 11:00 PM We’ve all heard the story of the preacher’s musical son before: the Stetson Stratoliner-wearing, bearded dreamer who up and moved to Nashville with nothing more than a Martin and a prayer. Caleb Elliott isn’t that. His story is something wilder. It comes from some place deeper. It’s a story the lanky, long-haired Louisianan has begun to tell on his debut album Forever to Fade. The swamp-art-rock record bridges the distance between the classically-trained sideman he was to the songwriting frontman he’s become; the 480 miles between his musical origins in Natchitoches and Lafayette to his new home in The Shoals of Alabama; and the shift between a gothic upbringing inside a cult-style religion to finding mental and artistic liberation. While riding in the backseats of tour vans with Nicole Atkins, Dylan LeBlanc, and Travis Meadows, and backing other artists like Lera Lynn, John Paul White, Donnie Fritts, and Sean McConnell in the studio, Caleb never stopped writing his own material. Along with producer Ben Tanner (Single Lock Records co-founder and keyboardist for Alabama Shakes), Caleb layers soulful string scores over that booming, dirty-sweet groove that gave name to the Muscle Shoals Sound and John Cale-inspired arrangements. Forever to Fade shows he’s ready to take the wheel. Kristin Diable “Diable’s bluesy rock gets Nashville glitz on this tambourine-bolstered barn-burner that rolls in like a summer storm and blooms like Southern magnolia.” – NPR on “Time Will Wait When we called it the American Dream, what we really meant was “the American Myth.” That myth convinced us that the right house/car/bank account/voting card could punch our tickets to a happily-ever-after, but for reasons too numerous and depressing to note, that myth is finally dying. Somewhere along the way, we realized the secret to mythology is not letting anyone sell it to you. You have to create your own. And now something new is springing up as we cast off the strange rules and crushing expectations of old. We’re rediscovering that freedom comes from the inside out, not from the outside in. Kristin Diable has been exploring freedom and choice in her music ever since she picked up an open mic at a lounge in Baton Rouge and stunned the audience into silence. She rode that vibe, away to New York and then back to her native Louisiana like a storm front, one that shook New Orleans and cooled the air. And her newest album, Create Your Own Mythology, invokes her Louisiana and Americana roots, while firing a rock-and-roll shot across the bow of borrowed myths. Producer Dave Cobb expands upon a stellar year that had seen Sturgill Simpson’s Metamodern Sounds in Country Music, Lindi Ortega’s Tin Star, and Jason Isbell’s Southeastern all arrive to critical acclaim–here he does double duty, producing and also standing the front lines on guitar. Cobb is known for spurring his performers to find their truest voices, and this is Diable’s richest and most elaborate album to date. It takes a person to write an album, but a good album writes a person too. Kristin realized Create Your Own Mythology was fighting its way into the world during her force-of-will tour, which alighted in Europe and Africa in 2013. Cut loose from the norm, discovering new venues almost as fast as she could perform in them, she found swimming in her head new songs about holding on, letting go, patience, and faith in the face of futility. And about penning your own rules and your own reality. From the gospel notes of “True Devotion”, written in Morocco during a Ramadan sunset, to the wistful universal waters flowing through “Deepest Blue”, Diable weaves a dense, bewitching net. The idea of embracing the infinite unknown and finding freedom, clarity through the trials we experience along our journey as human beings is explored in songs like the lead single, “I’ll Make Time for You”, and “Eyes to the Horizon”. The latter has been used twice in HBO’s Treme performed by the character, Annie. Rumi wrote, “Where did I come from, and what am I supposed to be doing? I have no idea. My soul is from elsewhere, I’m sure of that, and I intend to end up there.” Kristin says that music is her ticket on that journey to the soul’s distant elsewhere, and this new album is her invitation to the listener–not to follow her on her mythical path, but to go questing for their own. That’s a journey that will require some suffering, and acceptance, and evolution and honesty–these are the tokens hidden in these songs, smoothing that hard path, leading us away, and leading us home. The Mississippi River makes a hairpin turn in Baton Rouge before swerving unstoppably into the Gulf of Mexico. As it slowly zigs and zags like a cautious alcoholic, rich sediment sloshes loose onto the sun-baked Louisiana turf. It’s lush country. Things grow here. New Orleans grew here. Kristin Diable grew here and is still growing. And myths grow here like sugarcane does: fast, tall, and sweet. “Louisiana singer-songwriter Kristin Diable has already snagged spots at festivals like Austin City Limits and opening for greats like Lucinda Williams, but the announcement of her latest album Create Your Own Mythology has us thinking that 2015 may be Diable’s biggest year yet.” – Paste Magazine

1564203600 Live Music Shannon McNally Zeeland Street Market July 27, 2019 July 27, 2019 7:00 PM 9:00 PM Thom Jurek at All Music said it best, "Only Gram Parsons' term "Cosmic American Music" begins to touch her mercurial, changeling roots aesthetic, . . McNally is a Zen-like, post-Beat song poet”. For those who have followed McNally’s nearly twenty year career the thing that most sticks with the listener about her, is the timeless effortlessness that she brings to all she does. With a long catalog and longer list of peers with whom she has written, recorded and toured, McNally continues to turn out great music that defies blatant genre-fication. At home across the American (Americana) music spectrum, the Grammy nominee who’s live music career began on the jam band circuit of the 1990’s with bands like Robert Randolph and Derek Trucks, writes as well as she interprets the songs of others, has a top tier musicality to her craft, a soul stirring voice that immediately grabs one by the heart strings and a troubadour’s wanderlust, not to mention as it turns out, she is also an excellent electric guitar player. Like her anti-hero heros J.J. Cale, Tom Waits, Bob Dylan. Dr. John, and Jim Dickinson, McNally knows who she serves. She serves the song. Her quiet but steady plodding through the many layers of the business of music, hasn’t ever been rewarded with massive fame and fortune but in time that slow burn has become the treasure in and of itself. The part of McNally’s narrative that is often missed is that not only has she self-managed herself for nearly all of her career but that she has also been a stout warrior-like-artist who often went toe-to-toe with label heads and A&R to defend and fight for her visions. She left the major label world after ten years at Capital/EMI to fend for herself on various smaller labels and self-release paradigms. Perhaps the business of music is finally catching up with her independent spirit. We shall see. "She has the voice: bruised, smoky and ornery, right at home where country and soul meet. She has the melodies and the timing - she’s irresistible.” — Jon Pareles, The New York Times

1565326800 Live Music Keith Burnstein’s Kettle Black with Kathryn Rose Wood Zeeland Street Market August 9, 2019 August 9, 2019 7:00 PM 12:00 AM Keith Burnstein's Kettle Black -- Keith Burnstein is a New Orleans based singer-songwriter, pianist, and film composer who pens timeless tunes to live by. His is a new American songbook, one that draws as much from Tin Pan Alley as it does from modern geniuses like Jeff Tweedy, Dr. John, and Amon Tobin. "The songs, while instantly familiar, remain very much their own creations" (Secret Sound Shop), "combining the bedroom intimacy of a singer-songwriter" (Seven Days VT) with the rich harmonic palette of jazz, contemporary classical, and "world" musics. Originally a resident of NYC, Burnstein discovered and fell in love with New Orleans while touring with his former band, The Mumbles, in late 2009. Keith picked up camp a few months later, and hit the ground running. Since the move, he has toured with funk legends, The Headhunters, Louisiana songwriter, Kristin Diable, and released three records as a leader. He has also scored Jeff and Michael Zimbalist's gritty surf documentary, Momentum Generation, as well as the ABC series, The Last Defense, and is composing pieces for a forthcoming release about The Latitude Society. Keith's latest singer-songwriter project, Kettle Black, is a double percussion discussion that fans out the African and Cuban influences found in New Orleans music to create an entirely new pocket for his tunes. The group features Luke Quaranta from Toubab Krewe on percussion, Raja Kassis from Antibalas on guitar, and master drummer Michael Skinkus, who has worked extensively with Dr John and The Radiators. Kettle Black just released a live record, 4.28.16., and are hard at work on a new studio album, Things That Are Heavy Make Me Feel Light. The band will be making their New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival debut this spring on May 3rd, 2019. keithburnstein.com Kathryn Rose Wood Hailed as one of "New Orleans most prominent young singer/songwriters" (The Vinyl District) songwriter, guitarist, vocalist, and clinical music therapist Kathryn Rose Wood blends Soul, Americana, RnB, and Folk sounds into a unique musical landscape for vulnerably creative lyric-and-melody. 1565931600 Live Music Dan Penn-an intimate evening with Eric Erdman Zeeland Street Market August 16, 2019 August 16, 2019 7:00 PM 12:00 AM Dan Penn helped shape the development of southern soul music with his legendary songwriting, musicianship and production. A native of Vernon, Alabama, Penn moved to the Florence/Muscle Shoals area while still a teenager and assumed the role of lead vocalist in a local group calling itself the Mark V Combo. When asked what kind of music they played, Penn replies, “R&B, man. There was no such thing as rock. That was somethin’ you picked up and throwed.” He laughs. “Or threw.” It was around this time that he penned his first chart record, Conway Twitty's “Is a Bluebird Blue”. During the early ’60s, Penn began working with Rick Hall at Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals, first as a songwriter, and then as an artist under the names Lonnie Ray, Danny Lee, and finally Dan Penn. Penn’s early co-writing collaborations with Spooner Oldham while at Fame included “I’m Your Puppet,” which became a hit in 1965 for James & Bobby Purify, and “Out of Left Field,” and “It Tears Me Up” performed so memorably by Percy Sledge. He also co-wrote hits for Joe Simon, Jimmy Hughes and Wilson Pickett. Dan became an exclusive writer for Fame Publishing Co. for about three years. “It was sort of an in-house thing, where artists were comin’ and goin’, askin’ for songs, and there was sort of a built-in opportunity to try to be a commercial songwriter. According to Penn, the reason people hear touches of country in his brand of R&B is “because I’m an old hillbilly myself. Took me about 30 years to find out I was still a hillbilly. But compared to R&B, country is much easier. You ain’t got to struggle. Anybody can sing, ‘Because you’re mine, I walk the line.’ Go try to write ‘Out of Left Field’; go find all those chords and what all that means. So a hillbilly I am, but in the ’60s I really loved R&B music, and there was a lot of it to love. I loved Jimmy Reed, Bobby Bland, Ray Charles, Little Milton, James Brown… I always respected the black singers because they were always there — we were trying to get there. Knowing that the black singers wanted my songs inspired me.” A number of their classics were written for particular singers. “’Sweet Inspiration’ was written for the group the Sweet Inspirations, ‘Cry Like a Baby was written for Alex Chilton, ‘Out of Left Field’ was written for Percy Sledge,” says Penn. “I either was involved in the production or I was real close to the production teams, so when you’re in the middle of a clique, you got the power to either do it right, do it wrong or get out of the way and let somebody else do it.” One gets the impression that Penn was not the kind to get out of the way. “But you have an opportunity to score, and sometimes we scored. By that I mean comin’ up with a song that was good enough to get on the session. And then, if it came out and was a hit, the score was really complete at that point. So first you had to get on the session, and then the big question was, did it come out? And then the next question was, is it the single? At least back then. “Some of these songs weren’t written that way. ‘Do Right Woman’ wasn’t written for Aretha, nor ‘Dark End of the Street’ for James Carr. Me and Chips Moman just wrote those songs and we didn’t have anybody in mind. We worked great together while we were together—we’re so lucky to have those two songs. In 1966, Penn relocated to Memphis and began producing at Chips Moman’s American Recording Studio. While at American, Penn and Moman co-wrote “Do Right Woman, Do Right Man,” which Franklin turned into a soul classic, along with “Dark End of the Street,” stunningly recorded by James Carr, while Dan and Spooner came up with “Cry Like a Baby” for the Box Tops and later “A Woman Left Lonely,” written at Dan’s Beautiful Sounds Studio in Memphis, and chosen by Janis Joplin for her classic album Pearl. Penn and wife Linda relocated to Nashville in the ’70s—where he recently co-wrote and produced Bobby Purify’s comeback album, Better to Have It, in his basement studio. The session included one of Penn’s co-writers, Malaco keyboardist Carson Whitsett. The well-received album was released on Proper American in the summer of 2005. Dan Penn Talks About Some of His Hits “I’m Your Puppet”: “We’d done our usual, which was go get a barbecue plate or a burger. Then we came to the studio, and I had just bought a little 12-string guitar that sounded pretty good, so I just started playin’ [voices the guitar line from the song], and Spooner just slid in with [he makes the familiar keyboard sound]. Next thing you know, we’re into this song. I started writin’ stuff down, we cut a little demo on it and me and Rick came up to Nashville and put some strings on it. Actually, it was a record that came out on me, I believe on MGM, but it was called ‘The Puppet’—wasn’t no ‘Your.’ My little record didn’t do anything, and it went to the demo file. So when producer Don Schroeder brought the Purify brothers in, they went to the demo file and they picked that one out. When they started singin’ it, they sang ‘I’m your puppet’—they couldn’t remember, I guess. And I didn’t like it anyway; I thought it was too fast, kind of a rip-off of Sam & Dave, I thought. At least that’s what I was thinkin’ then. Later on, when it came out and became a hit, I loved it. It was easy to get on board later.” “Out of Left Field”: “People say it’s a baseball metaphor, but I always think it’s a farm metaphor, like an old tractor bringin’ some hay in. The chords Spooner came up with and the places we went are kinda strange. I just love it ’cause it’s a heck of a way to say ‘She walked in out of nowhere.’” “Do Right Woman, Do Right Man”: In January 1967, Atlantic’s Jerry Wexler brought Aretha Franklin to Fame to record “I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You.” Penn recalled the scene. “When she walked in she was like a young queen. Most of the guys in the studio pretended not to be paying too much attention to her, but they were looking at her from the corner of their eyes. She appeared so calm, but I knew she was scared to death. She just sat down at the piano, calmly took a deep breath, lifted her hand up and then just hit the unknown chord! The instant she did that all the guys stopped eating or talking or whatever and just headed for their guitars and drums to play. You just knew history was going to be made that day.” “The Dark End of the Street”: “We tracked at Hi, and a few weeks later we bought James Carr to American and did his vocal overdubs and I did some background vocals. We thought James was fantastic; he had made some good records before, and we knew we had made a good record. Did we realize it was going to become hailed as a masterpiece? Not really, but I liked the song and the record a lot. What did I think of Aretha’s version? It was ok, but nobody did it as good as James Carr, not even me. “You Left the Water Running”: “Otis Redding did a demo for me on “You Left the Water Running”. “I got to be around him the day he cut Arthur Conley on ‘Sweet Soul Music’ at Fame. Otis was the most effective record producer I have ever seen.” “Cry Like a Baby”: I produced “The Letter” And “Cry Like A Baby” on The Box Tops. They were both Big hits. “Everybody thinks I coaxed [Alex Chilton] into doing a lot of vocal tricks, but it’s not true—he just had it. The only thing I ever told that young man to do was sing ‘aeroplane’ instead of ‘airplane’ on ‘The Letter’—I was just tryin’ to make it flow better. Some of Dan’s latest productions have been Greg Trooper and The Hacienda Brothers. His most recent one is Julian Dawson’s “Deep Rain” due to be released in September ’08. He is currently playing live shows with the great Memphis keyboard man Bobby Emmons.
1566622800 Live Music Tom Leggett Band Zeeland Street Market August 24, 2019 August 24, 2019 7:00 PM 12:00 AM Tom Leggett Band In a short span, the Tom Leggett Band has emerged as one of the hardest working up-and-coming roots rock & blues acts in New Orleans. Led by guitarist, singer & songwriter Tom Leggett, the group presents a cast of some of the Crescent City’s finest musicians to play around the Southeast and beyond, from clubs to the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. After cutting his teeth playing gigs in his birthplace of Little Rock, Arkansas, Tom moved to New Orleans in 1997 with friend and musical collaborator Aaron Wilkinson (Honey Island Swamp Band) to soak up the area's rich traditions and explore the city's musical heritage. While studying under legendary jazz guitar instructor Hank Mackie, Leggett and Wilkinson co-founded jazz-funk band idletime in 1999. The band signed with Louisiana Red Hot Records in 2000 and toured nationally, headlining clubs and festivals and opening for groups like the funky Meters, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Rebirth Brass Band, Derek Trucks Band, North Mississippi Allstars and others before disbanding in 2005 when hurricanes Katrina and Rita devastated New Orleans and scattered the band’s members. Rebuilding post-Katrina, Tom began working regularly as a freelance guitarist in a wide range of styles, playing alongside world-class musicians in the Crescent City and on the road, including Soul Brass Band, Koan & My Theme Music, Derrick Freeman & Smoker's World, Sunpie & the Louisiana Sunspots, Ted Hefko & the Thousandaires, Jenn Howard Band, Rockin' Jake Band, Corey Henry & the Young Fellas, and many more. After nearly two decades of performances as a New Orleans artist, Tom assembled his closest musician friends, and with the independent release of the band's first album Spinnin’ My Wheels, officially launched his roots rock & blues band. The self-produced record, released independently in 2013, features 10 original songs with influences from rock, blues and outlaw country, becoming core material for regular live performances by the Tom Leggett Band. In 2017, the band added horns on their latest release, Jewel In My Crown, a funkier, “more polished and fully realized” album of original music, 10 new songs written by Tom and performed by an all-star band of New Orleans’ including Leon “Kid Chocolate” Brown, Terrence Houston, Tom Worrell, Michael “Mikey B3” Burkart, Rik Fletcher, Pete Bradish, Scott Jackson, James Martin, Terrance Taplin, Jimmy Sweetwater, Jerome Harris, and Derek Eidson. The album has garnered both popular and critical success, positioning the band for a full calendar of performances both on the road and at home, including their first performance at the 50th New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival in 2019.

1567314000 Live Music Johnny Vidocovich Zeeland Street Market September 1, 2019 September 1, 2019 6:00 PM 2:37 PM As Johnny Vidacovich stood on-stage talking to the crowd gathered to hear hometown favorite Astral Project at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, the group's drummer epitomized the New Orleans musician's sensibility: relaxed, unpretentious, and great. And when he sang about the passing of the old ways in "Old Folks," you could tell he meant it. Drawing on the musical heritage of New Orleans, Johnny Vidacovich has become one of the best drummers in a city known for its drummers. Born and bred in New Orleans, Vidacovich has the city's unique, syncopated backbeat running in his veins. Many outsiders have sought to imitate that sound which comes so naturally to those who grew up exposed to the Big Easy's street music traditions. One can hear the beat of the street in multifarious places, from the music of the Mardi Gras Indians to the Neville Brothers to Vidacovich himself. He is the quintessential New Orleans jazz drummer, with all the exuberance and skill befitting one who grew up in the birthplace of jazz. Since starting to play the drums at the age of ten, performing has been the passion of Johnny Vidacovich. From French Quarter clubs to the big stages, he has shared his talents with greats like New Orleans' "Tan Canary" Johnny Adams, Professor Longhair, and Mose Allison, and as a member of Astral Project. The seminal New Orleans contemporary jazz group, Astral Project has been taking its audiences to higher planes of reality for several decades. The loose affiliation finds its members doing their own thing and returning to renew their musical acquaintanceship with each other. Each player is a master in his own right: Steve Mazakowski on the guitar willed to him by the late, great Danny Barker; James Singleton, at one with his bass; Tony Dagradi, the essence of cool on the saxophone; wild man David Torkanowsky on the piano; and Vidacovich on the drums. Astral Project started out in the '70s, jamming at the venerable Absinthe House on Bourbon Street, with Bobby McFerrin often sitting in. Gigs at Snug Harbor and the New Orleans Jazz Fest won them a devoted local following, which has expanded to international acclaim. The musicians have continued to hone their skills individually and collectively in live gigs and recording sessions. The group's first CD, Dreams of Love (now out of print) was released in 1987, and things have been on the upswing ever since. The ensemble's live CD, Astral Project, introduced the artists to audiences in far flung places like New York, L.A., and Europe, and established their reputation as pushers of the envelope in the jazz idiom. Meanwhile, Vidacovich continued to gig and record with other musicians until he became the most sought after drummer in the city of New Orleans. He also paid his dues in New York, where he received rave reviews. Vidacovich has been recognized by everything from the Big Easy Entertainment Awards to accolades in Offbeat and Downbeat and the New York Times, to an appearance on the NPR show of fellow New Orleanian Branford Marsalis, Jazz Profiles. It is in improvisation that his abilities show to greatest advantage. Always sensitive to the shifting sands of jazz, the drum maestro may mix it up with reggae, bebop, street beat, and blues rhythms in the course of one tune, as he follows the lead of one of his collaborators. The lightning speed with which he morphs from one style to another as the occasion requires can be heard on CDs such as Astral Project's Voodoo Bop and Elevado; his own Mystery Street, and Banks Street; and We Came To Play with George Porter Jr. He is also a highly regarded teacher and educator whose past students include Stanton Moore and Brian Blade. He has been a longtime faculty member at Loyola University and the University of New Orleans. Johnny and his wife Deborah maintain the Tipitina’s Sunday music workshops where younger students can come play with the pros on Sundays at Tip’s. Johnny played the first and every New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival (which just celebrated its 44th anniversary) and has become a fixture on the New Orleans music scene. He has 4 records under his own name and an instructional book and DVD focusing on his approach to New Orleans drumming. He continues to maintain an active playing, touring and teaching schedule, both in New Orleans and all over the world via Skype.
