2 days each year, the Baton Rouge community can tour the USS KIDD (DD-661) and the museum galleries at no charge.
The USS KIDD, along with other downtown museums, opens its doors on the first Sunday of every month to allow visitors access at no cost. These free days include themed arts and crafts for children. From paper airplane contests, to making Mother’s Day cards or writing Christmas cards for military service members, young people of all ages and backgrounds come together with their families at the USS KIDD. Attendees can even find a new addition to their family via pet adoption during "Lucky & Scotty Day" (named for our WWII canine mascots). While making paper plate sharks during "Our Finned Friends", learning to be Jedi during "May the Fourth be with You", or having sword fights and learning to curtsey during "Pirates & Princesses," they all learn a little bit of history.
#FreeFirstSunday runs from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Please keep in mind that entry will end at 3:15 p.m. to ensure that patrons have enough time to see everything, so make sure to plan accordingly. In addition to free tours of the ship and museum, we will have arts and crafts and coloring stations inside the museum.
We are also pleased to announce that we have again partnered with several local food trucks that will be parked out in front of the museum!
Make sure to mark yourself as 'going' to this event to ensure you receive any updates to the event such as planned themes or notices about weather issues and don't forget to #ShareThisPost with your friends and family! |

USS KIDD Veterans Museum is pleased to bring to Baton Rouge the traveling exhibit “The Homefront.” Presented by the Australian National Maritime Museum and the War and Peace in the Pacific 75 program, the exhibit consists of nine graphic banners and will be on display through November 30, 2020. An activity guide is available online or by request.
The War and Peace in the Pacific 75 Learning Program connects high schools from Australia, the United States and Japan to commemorate the 75th anniversary of WWII in the Pacific and promote international friendship and youth leadership.

Students conduct project-based research examining key aspects of WWII in their country and community, discovering untold stories and reinterpreting the past. In 2018 students researched “The Homefront.” This exhibition tells in their own words what they discovered about life at home during WWII in the Pacific.
Admission to the exhibit is included with admission to the Museum.

The USS KIDD Veterans Museum is proud to host the visit of the tall ship Nao TRINIDAD, which will be sailing upriver to Baton Rouge next month and be open for public tours from March 13th through the 25th on the downtown riverfront.
The Nao TRINIDAD is a Spanish-built replica of the 16th-Century flagship of the Magellan-Elcano expedition, the first to sail around the world. The original was the flagship of the Armada del Maluco (1519-1522), captained by Ferdinand Magellan. Five Naos (a ship that combined the design elements of both Mediterranean and Northern European-style ships) departed from Sevilla, but only two made it to the Spice Islands, Nao TRINIDAD was one of them. The replica Nao TRINDAD’s visit to America celebrates 500 years since the world’s first circumnavigation of the globe.
Visitors will be able to tour four decks in order to experience how 16th-Century life was like onboard and how it is to live today on a historical ship of that time. They will be able to learn about seamanship directly from the crew, who will have many amazing experiences from their long voyages to share.
Nao TRINIDAD will be moored alongside USS KIDD during her stay in Baton Rouge. Tickets are $25 per person (children under 5 years old with an adult are free) and include access to the USS KIDD Veterans Museum, and both ships. The Museum will be open for special engagement hours, 9:30am to 4:30 pm, from March 13th through March 25th (the opening date may change, due to weather possibly impacting the Nao TRINIDAD’s arrival in Baton Rouge). Because this is a multi-day event, tickets are available only at the entrance to the USS KIDD Veterans Museum on the day of visit.

Get Outside Day - USS Kidd |
USS Kidd |
June 10, 2023 |
June 10, 2023 |
9:30 AM |
3:30 PM |
Military-Veterans Advocacy, a Slidell, LA, based veterans advocacy organization and the USS Kidd Veterans Museum jointly announce the inaugural “Veterans Get Outside Day” to take place at the Museum from 9:30 am to 3:00 pm Saturday, June 10, 2023. The event is based on the Canadian National “Get Outside Day” presented by the Benjamin Ware Legacy Fund and the i2 Project.
The Get Outside Day is designed to promote wilderness therapy for veterans, especially those suffering from Post Traumatic Stress, Traumatic Brain Injury, anxiety and depression. The event uses the healing powers of nature to help reduce stress and anxiety.
Commander John B. Wells, USN (retired), Chairman of Military-Veterans Advocacy noted that over 6000 veterans commit suicide every year – often due to the ravages of service-connected mental illness. “We want veterans to spend a day out in the sun, doing something enjoyable and just drink in Mother Nature while breathing fresh air,” Wells said. “We don’t care what activity you choose. Ride a bike, fish, hunt, backpack or just sit in the sun reading a book,” Wells continued. “Just do something enjoyable.”
Parks Stephenson, Executive Director of the USS Kidd Veterans Museum, encourages veterans, their families and friends to come to the riverfront downtown to participate in the event. “It's going to be a beautiful day, the levee and Museum will be open and people will have a wonderful time."
Louisiana Senator Bill Cassidy and Baton Rouge Congressman Garrett Graves sponsored companion resolutions to recognize the day. “We owe it to the men and women who traveled oceans to protect us to address the veteran suicide crisis,” said Dr. Cassidy. “Vets Get Outside Day is a positive step towards ensuring veterans know they have the help they need available to them.” Congressman Graves added: “Veterans Get Outside Day encourages Veterans to experience the outdoors and engage in recreational activities such as hiking, biking, fishing, and hunting, and ultimately promotes a passion for the outdoors. Studies show that nature-based therapy can work.”
Rachel Ware, Executive Director of the Benjamin Ware Legacy Fund, noted: “The i2 Project Get Outside Day initiative encourages people to go outside and benefit from nature. We are happy to work with MVA to promote mental health among those who have fought to defend North America.”
Museum and ship tickets will be sold separately. Admission to the Veterans Get Outside Day is free, please check in at the table that will be set up in the memorial plaza adjacent to the Museum.
Points of contact for MVA is CDR John B Wells, USN (Ret.), at 985-290-6940. For USS Kidd Veterans Museum, contact Parks Stephenson at 252-342-1942. |
