During the entertaining visual presentation, cadets take part in hands-on demonstrations, crafts and experiments! Each session is stand-alone, and kids never have to make a commitment to attend consecutive sessions.

Using a 50.8-cm professional-grade reflecting telescope and a myriad of smaller instruments, HRPO personnel (BREC management, LSU professors and students, and BRAS volunteers) bring the majesty of the heavens to the visitors with no admission fee. These are the largest such instruments accessible to the public in the local area. Earth’s Moon, the other planets and their moons, double stars, star clusters, nebulae and distant galaxies are resolved into breathtaking images. As the Earth orbits the Sun, there are about two hours of new objects monthly.

It’s not light, it’s not dark. It’s that special time called twilight, and HRPO wants to introduce you to it! Are all sections of the sky the same shade of blue? Which stars are seen first? Are Mercury and Venus or the Moon out? Is that moving object a plane, a satellite or space debris? How much actual darkness should I expect in a light-polluted city when twilight has passed? There is no other time like twilight. Bring it into your life!

For forty years BRAS has educated countless numbers of citizens in the joys of planetary and deep-sky gazing, the perils of light pollution and factors to consider when buying a pair of binoculars or a telescope.
Over the years BRAS members have constructed their own telescopes and photographic platforms; and imaged comets, earned observing certificates and discovered asteroids. Anyone interested in learning more about BRAS is invited to attend.

There is no other time like twilight. Bring it into your life! Binoculars are recommended.

February 3, 2023 |
7:30 PM |
8:00 PM |
Friday/ Feb. 3 + 10 + 17 + 24 / 7:30pm / FREE / Ages 14+
Feb. 3: “Explorer 1 65th Anniversary” - One of the hottest stretches of the Space Race was those heady yet stressful days of the late 1950s. The U.S. and the Soviet Union were rushing to see who would or could claim atmospheric domination. Though Sputnik gave us pause--and a chill--and the Vanguard fiasco humbled us, we finally made it with help from a Jupiter C rocket….
Feb. 10: “Chelyabinsk—Ten Years Later” - In a harrowing incident, a hitherto unknown asteroid exploding not too high above the ground in Russia, shattering glass and causing incredible damage and injuries. How can we protect our planet? What’s the actual risk and how does the DART mission’s recent success lead us to success?
Feb. 17: “Pulsars” – In 1967 a young graduate student named Jocelyn Bell notices a strange but quite rhythmic signal from outer space. What could it be? The exciting story climaxed with a paper in the winter of 1968 that opened a new avenue of study in astrophysics.
Feb. 24: “Our Birth Stars” - A person’s birth star is a star whose light took as long to reach Earth as he’s been alive. Of course, birth stars change over the course of a human lifetime and are as varied as human beings themselves! How can you see yours?

Aug. 4: “The Visible Passes” - Since 1958 defunct satellites, rocket bodies, active payloads and space stations have peppered the views of those with little to no light pollution or magnification devices. How can you see these manmade objects? Do they cause problems for glamour shots of space or active scientific data gathering?
Aug. 11: “STEREO Shows the Sun” - The mission was revolutionary: place two spacecraft at different vantage points to record our parent star simultaneously. BREC Center Supervisor James DeOliveira shows the fascinating science that prepared us for this year’s extreme level of activity.
Aug. 18: “X-Ray Astronomy” - NASA, JAXA and ESA are collaborating on the soon-to-launch XRISM mission that will investigate the x-ray Universe like never before. The instruments have been tested, the mirror quadrants have been installed. Did we think of everything?
Aug. 25: “The Krakatoa Eruption - Some believe it to be the largest Earth volcano eruption ever. Killing tens of thousands and changing the local landscape, the event will be outlined by BREC Education Program Specialist Amy Northrop.
