Marina Orchestra is the New Orleans based worldbeat-rock outfit complete with a blaring brass section, swinging back-up singers, churning polyrhythms and sweet melodies that will stick with you. While listening, you might be reminded of classic West-African guitar bands, Caribbean vocal harmonies, and good old fashioned Rock n’ Roll. It’s all expertly crafted into original compositions written by guitarist and lead-vocalist Justin Powers and brought to life with a little help from his friends.
Dedicated to bringing feel-good music to the masses, Marina Orchestra has been operating since 2010 releasing albums “Take on the Silence” (2011), “Oceans” (2014) and EP “Wildlands” (2016). A recent series of singles has been their latest effort with "Mistake", “Where There’s Life” (2018) and "Before You Walk Away" (2017) which was named top 5 singles on the WWOZ New Orleans Music show in 2017.
Powers, a Chicago-area native, launched the project while residing in Knoxville, TN. In 2015 the act relocated to New Orleans, LA. Along the way they have appeared at Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, Secret Stages Festival and have shared the stage with Sierra Leonne's Refugee All-Stars, Rusted Root, Future Islands, Peelander Z, Leo Nocentelli and Deacon John Moore. |

We've known it was coming for a while now, but we didn't want to face it. Try as we might, though, we can't stop time, so here we are saying farewell to the wonder that is Matthew Polito.
We don't even know where to start with how much we love him, but we figured that a pretty good place would be with you guys and gals who want to share in that love with us. He was here for many of you during some of the Atomic years, and he's been a huge part of our first year, so we know he's befriended tons of you. So please join us as we say goodbye to the kindest, sweetest, wittiest, and certainly curliest guy to ever come out of Red Stick, and wish him well as he and Malarie set out to begin new adventures setting up home in D.C. It won't be the same here without him, and we'll miss him terribly, but we'll at least be able to send him on his way knowing just how very loved, admired, and appreciated he's been to so many of us.
We'll have food and drink here for everyone, but feel free to bring whatever you like. DJ Soul Lab will also be in-house. Zak and I will be working, and Matt will be here with us for one final day, (not working ...I'm not a monster) just hanging out and saying farewell. We asked him if he wanted a party, but Sad, Sad Sunday seemed more his speed.
So drop in and say goodbye. Stay for the day, a few hours, a few minutes, or just open the door and give a little wave. Just come and say goodbye to someone who has meant the world to me, to us, and to so many of you. And then try and smile when you remember that wherever he is, he always will.
And please feel free to share this post. We don't know everyone Matt knows, and would sure love your help in getting the word out |

We’re thrilled to be hosting the Baton Rouge Community College Arts Club this Sunday, December 15, at our new location, 136 S. Acadian Thruway, as we hold our very first Arts Market. We’re hoping to make this a regular event, so showing your support would go a long way in helping us assist those talented BRCC students in reaching that goal, and allowing us to add more artists and crafts people to the event. Speaking of, if you’ve got a tent and you’re ready to show this Sunday, want to come play some tunes, or have a license and some food you’d like to sell, feel free to email us at info@popshop.com. We’d love to have you on board. We have plenty of room, so if you’re willing and able, so are we!
So come join us for some Christmas shopping, or just treat yourself to something original, unique, and beautiful!
Oh, and we’ll be open too. So grab yourselves some vinyl gifts or gift certificates for those music lovers in your life. |
