Garden Fest is a family friendly festival in the middle of Baton Rouge that promotes locally grown foods. Your family will enjoy fresh morning omelets by the Louisiana Egg Commission and famous Bloody Mary samples by Mason's Grill. Activities for kids include water slides, "Touch-a-Tractor" and hayrides! Don’t miss our education sessions to learn more about gardening, nature and environmental programs in the Conference Center to educate people of all ages. There will be vegetable trials and tastings, “Ask the Expert” plant and gardening tent, and a chance to meet amazing local plant and gardening clubs in Baton Rouge.

There are a few spaces left at our next Towel Hypertufa class, if anyone would like to get in on this fun technique for making garden containers. This session of our popular class is scheduled for September 15, 2019, at the LSU Ag Center Botanic Gardens, 4560 Essen Lane, in Baton Rouge. The class will be in the Pavilion from 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
This hypertufa technique uses towels (hand, face cloth, etc.) to make garden containers. The towels are dipped into a liquid mixture of portland cement and other materials, then draped over a form; when they harden, they form a strong, unique container.
The class is $10 for HSABR members and $15 for non-members. Register at https://www.hsabr.org/towel-hypertufa-workshop.html. You may pay via PayPal or check; both the PayPal link and the mailing address for checks are on the confirmation page that will appear after you submit your registration. Your registration is not complete until payment is received.

Other activities include climbing the hay mountain, animal feeding with Goula Paradise Farm, going on a "Rock Rascal" rock hunt, take a pic' and pick-a-pumpkin in the pumpkin patch, take-home crafts, and more!
To ensure the safety and well-being of all attendees, this year's Corn Maze has a brand new layout and will operate with careful social distancing guidelines in place.
Masks will be required in certain areas. Each Saturday offers 3 sessions to choose from with a 30-minute gap between each session to allow for cleaning and sanitation.

Lee Rouse, horticulturist and Tree Healthcare Manager at Bayou Tree Service, is talking tree maintenance for Reflections in the Garden this month. Hurricane preparation, ball moss, irrigation, and root zones are all on the agenda. Tune in for some helpful tree tips!
Reflections in the Garden is a monthly "lunch and learn" series presented by Friends of LSU AgCenter Botanic Gardens. The lectures are held on the first Monday of the month at noon at the Botanic Gardens.

Grab your birding gear and join us bright and early to catch a glimpse of some of these species on a three-hour guided tour lead by different birding specialists through the birding loops at Burden.
Admission is $5 per person. The capacity for each excursion is limited to 10 guests.
The excursion is designed to maintain appropriate social distancing between participants.

StoryTime in the Garden is a creative way of mixing storytelling and imagination with hands-on craft activities for children. The program meets one Saturday a month August through May from 9 a.m. - Noon.
Children ages 3-8 can enjoy storybook readings and imagination-themed activities every half hour. All children participating in the program must be accompanied by an adult. The last reading begins at 11:30.
Registration is not required and admission is free except in October when StoryTime is associated with Corn Maze which has an entrance fee.

One Saturday a month, we get together to listen to storybook readings and flex our creative muscles!
Young children will have a blast interacting with other kids, making arts and crafts, and listening to stories. Every half hour, we switch between stories and crafts to keep young children interested and engaged. Little ones also receive a book to take home with them.
Best suited for children ages 3-8, but children of all ages are welcome!
Admission is free. No registration is required.

We're partnering with Baton Rouge Green to bring you the biggest, baddest Arbor Day ever!
There will be tree climbing with Bofinger's Tree Service, a scavenger hunt, ax throwing with the Timber Tigers, shopping with local vendors and even a chance to meet Smokey Bear (don't worry, he's not a real bear). Plant your very own tree in the Burden Woods and track its growth using GPS coordinates! The trees you plant help reforest the Burden Woods after previous hurricane seasons.
Baton Rouge Green will host their annual tree giveaway in conjunction with Arbor Day.

Did you know 320 species of birds have been recorded in and around Burden, including common species, such as northern mockingbirds and ruby-throated hummingbirds, seven different woodpeckers, waterfowl and wading birds, and a variety of resident migratory songbirds??
Grab your birding gear and join us bright and early to catch a glimpse of some of these species on a two-hour guided tour led by different birding specialists through the birding loops at Burden. The capacity for each group is limited to 15 guests.
If you are unable to attend, please give at least 48 hours notice. Failure to do so multiple times will result in barring from future birding excursions.
Participants will meet their guide at the Rural Life Museum to begin their excursion.
Participants might want to bring binoculars, a cell phone, birding apps and/or Field Guides, sunscreen, insect repellant, appropriate outdoor footwear, weather-appropriate clothing and layers, and water to stay hydrated!

Shop from over one hundred camellia selections for your garden or take a look through the exhibit of award-winning camellias grown by the Baton Rouge Camellia Society and by gardeners like you!
Many of these camellias have been meticulously propagated from the expansive camellia collections at the Botanic Gardens.
The Camellia Society will also offer planting and management advice, a grafting demonstration and a waxing demonstration. The Camellia Show will be at the Rural Life Museum, and the Sale will be at the Botanic Gardens. Signage will guide guests to the sale area on the day of the event.
The sale will offer 150 different varieties of camellias. The cost of plants ranges from $20 to $30. Cards, cash and checks are all accepted forms of payment. |

We're back! After having held only a pared-down Herb Day plant sale for the last two years, we're back with not only hundreds of healthy herb plants and LSU Superplant vegetable starts for sale, but we'll also have vendors, classes, food trucks, and more!
Come early for the best selection—popular herbs tend to sell out quickly!
Please bring small bills if possible to make checking out as quick as possible.
And it's a good idea to bring a wagon for your purchases, also!
The classes are free of charge and will take place in the Ione Burden Conference Center:
9:00–10:00 "The Herbal Adventure," a general overview of herbs by Art Scarbrough
10:00–11:00 "Native Medicinal Plants," by Jen Blanchard
11:00–12:00 "Container Gardening," by Ruby Homayssi
Local vendors and artisans offering everything from soaps and art to birdhouses, jewelry, and pottery will be on hand in the open-air market and in the Orangerie. Also in the Orangerie, HSABR will have a tea bar with a variety of tisanes (herbal teas) for you to sample and purchase!
This is a family-friendly event with an arts and crafts table for the kiddos, so feel free to bring the whole crew!
Shopping and learning can work up an appetite, but you don’t have to starve! Food trucks from Capital City Seafood, That’s a Wrap, City Gelato, Kettle Corn, and Premier Seafood will be offering their wares to stave off the hunger pangs!
In 2021, the Herb Society of America Baton Rouge Unit established an annual Garden Internship Program to enable a college student to receive professional experience in two public gardens in Baton Rouge under the care and keeping of HSABR. Hosting community events such as Herb Day provides funding to support our mission and internship opportunities through our organization. It also provides opportunities for members of HSABR to participate in hands-on outreach in the horticulture of herbs and provides an opportunity to meet and engage with the public, and give garden tours, and presentations. It is an excellent opportunity for creating a community that is more connected and sustainable.

Y?our day will begin with a presentation from LSU AgCenter Extension Agent Gabriel LoCoco explaining all you need to know about citrus care and maintenance. After the presentation, you'll join Botanic Gardens staff in the citrus orchard for a pruning demonstration.
O?nce you've learned it all, you'll put your knowledge to work for a hands-on pruning experience.

Join us for some crazy mazy fun at Baton Rouge's favorite fall event!
Register for one of three two-hour sessions on any Saturday in October.
Each two-hour Corn Maze experience is full of fun activities for all ages. Traverse the maze. Meander through the sunflower fields. Ride a hayride with the ones you love. Climb hay mountain. Explore the corn crib. Try your hand at our gargantuan games. Meet the animals at Goula Paradise Farms petting farm. Visit the pumpkin patch where you can take a pic and pick one to take home!

Arbor Day will be held at the LSU AgCenter Botanic Gardens in partnership with Baton Rouge Green on Saturday, January 20 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Baton Rouge Green will host their annual tree giveaway in conjunction with Arbor Day. Giveaway trees are limited to one per household.
Activities:
- Tree climbing with Bofinger's Tree Service
- Scavenger hunt
- Ax throwing with the Timber Tigers
- Shopping with local vendors
- Meet Smokey Bear
- Local food trucks Petit Rouge and Ole Mississippi Smokehouse
- Plant a tree in the Burden Woods and track its growth using GPS coordinates! Limit is one tree per family.

The Icon Workshop is a thoughtful and meditative week-long retreat focusing on traditional painting techniques that date back 2,000 years. This spring the class will offer a tribute to the people of Ukraine by making St. Olga of Kyiv the Icon.
The workshop is led by trained Iconographers in the Ione Burden Conference Center. No artistic skill or previous painting experience is required, and all materials are provided by Friends of LSU AgCenter Botanic Gardens. Coffee and lunch are provided daily.

Wild Ones Chapter Members have been busy collecting seeds from our certified habitats.
This is the third year that we have met to offer seeds and to accept donations to fill our supply for our various projects throughout the year.
You don’t need to bring seeds to attend. But if you do, please be sure to label them as accurately as you can. (Ask us how)
If you are not a chapter member we ask that you be prepared to help us cover the cost associated with the meeting by paying 5.00 at the door.

Grab your costumes, glow sticks and flashlights and head on over to Night Maze.
At our family-friendly Night Maze, you can take an evening stroll through the corn maze, roast marshmallows by the bonfire, climb hay mountain, go for a "swim" in the corn crib, play giant games and dance to live music. Concessions will be available for purchase from local vendors.
Daytime Corn Maze admission does not include Night Maze admission. Night Maze tickets must be purchased separately.
Don't forget your lawn chairs if you plan on jammin' with the band all night long! |
