CISLANDERUS: Canary+ISLANDERUS+United States, or Canary Islanders in the United States, is the work of researcher Thenesoya V. Martin De la Nuez and Photographer Anibal Martel. Together Martin De la Muez and Martel spent years researching the Canary Islander’s migration to South Louisiana. The two met with descendants still living throughout the state. With an interdisciplinary focus grounded in cultural and insular studies, documentary photography, and anthropology, this exhibition shows the faces and lives of a community on the verge of disappearance. The photographic center of this exhibition showcases a body of work that demonstrates different ways to connect history and presence.
This exhibition at Capitol Park Museum in Baton Rouge expands upon the work compiled by Martin De la Nuez and Martel. This exhibition will feature artifacts from Los Islanos Museum in St. Bernard Parish, the Diocese of Baton Rouge, Louisiana State University, and maps and images from the Canary Island Society of Louisiana, these new items will delve deeper into the story of this community. |

The Mardi Gras Shipwreck Exhibition
In 2007, a team of archaeologists and researchers mapped, recovered, and analyzed more than 1,000 artifacts from an underwater archaeological site in the Gulf of Mexico. While the artifacts and research indicate the ship sank in the early 1800s, the name of the ship and its crewmembers remain unknown. It's referred to as the Mardi Gras Shipwreck for the pipeline where it was found in 2002 by Okeanos Gas Gathering Company while surveying the floor of the gulf about 35 miles off the coast in 4,000 feet of water.
The Mardi Gras Shipwreck exhibit features recovered artifacts that remained underwater for over 200 years and represents over a decade of collaborative research and conservation. Visit the exhibit to learn more about what researchers pieced together from the remains of this mysterious shipwreck! |

"Why Louisiana Should Celebrate September 21, 1779 - The Recovered Memories of Spain and Louisiana in Support of the American Revolution".
Although not one of the original 13 Colonies, Spanish Louisiana under Governor Bernardo de Galvez was instrumental in ensuring the success of the American Revolution. Regular troops and militias of Spanish Louisiana defeated the British in key battles in the Mississippi River Valley and the Gulf of Mexico. The Battle of Baton Rouge on September 21, 1779 was the first major campaign and is virtually unknown to most Louisianians. Robert Freeland will review the role of Galvez and Spanish Louisiana based on the 2018 "Recovered Memories" exhibit at The Cabildo. Members of the Granaderos y Damas de Galvez organization will present on the uniforms and equipment Louisiana troops used to defeat the British.
Robert Freeland is a graduate of Tulane University with a double major in Economics and Latin Americans Studies, and is Vice President of the Friends of the Cabildo, the volunteer organization of the Louisiana State Museum in New Orleans and Governor of La Luisiana Chapter of the Granaderos y Damas de Galvez. |

Join us on Saturday, February 5 for a bike tour to locations featured in The Yellow Book exhibit, which is currently on display at the Capitol Park Museum.
“This exhibition explores the legacy of interstate construction in the Old South Baton Rouge neighborhood. It is part of photographer Johanna Warwick’s larger project ‘The Yellow Book,’ named after a 1955 government publication showing proposed interstate routes,” states the museum’s website.
Almost every city in America was transformed by the inclusion of elevated interstate frameworks. On this tour, we’ll talk about what the landscape looked like before and after its addition. We’ll also take a look at efforts underway to bring life back to the areas that have been all but destroyed over the decades from neglect.
This ride is open to all-ages, but children should be able to ride at least 7 miles. Children under the age of 12 are legally required to wear a helmet. This is a ride-at-your-own-risk event.

Join us for a free presentation about the history of Cinco de Mayo with Robert Freeland on Thursday, May 5.
Did you know that Benito Juárez, Mexico’s president on May 5, 1862, when the Mexican army defeated European invaders in Puebla, once lived in New Orleans? Exiled from Mexico for political reasons, Juárez called the Crescent City home during two separate periods in the 1850s. More than a century later, the Mexican government gave the city a statue of Juárez, which was placed at 1200 Conti Street in the neighborhood where the leader resided .
This discussion will explore connections between Louisiana and Mexico and the lasting impact these ties have had on the cultural landscape of New Orleans.
Robert Freeland graduated from Tulane University with a double major in economics and Latin American studies. He is vice president of Friends of the Cabildo, a volunteer organization that supports the Louisiana State Museum in New Orleans, and governor of La Luisiana, a chapter of the Granaderos y Damas de Gálvez. |

The exhibition "Carnival in the Nation’s Capital: The Washington Mardi Gras Ball" will showcase the story of Louisiana’s not-to-be missed annual celebration. Begun in 1944 by homesick Louisianians eager to introduce fellow Washingtonians to their favorite holiday, Washington Mardi Gras has expanded to a three-day whirlwind of parties, brunches, dinners, and networking, culminating in a formal ball under the auspices of the Mystick Krewe of Louisianians. The state’s congressional delegation plays a major role, with Senators Russell Long and John Breaux serving as the longtime captains of the krewe, which is led today by U.S. House Minority Whip Steve Scalise. In addition to the royal court, the ball honors about two dozen queens representing Louisiana’s colorful festivals, including the Strawberry, Orange, Frog, and Shrimp and Petroleum Festivals.
Opening to the public on Tuesday, October 18, at the Capitol Park Museum in Baton Rouge, the exhibition will feature royal regalia, costumes, photographs, posters, and memorabilia drawn from the collection of the Louisiana State Museum, the archives of the Mystic Krewe of Louisianians, and private lenders. Highlights include the gown that Barbara Boggs, daughter of Hale and Lindy Boggs, wore as queen in 1957; Russell Long’s and John Breaux’s captain’s costumes; George Rodrigue’s painting of the 1985 king, Marion Edwards; and photographs showing national political figures, from Richard Nixon, John F. Kennedy, and Gerald and Betty Ford to Sandra Day O’Connor. Sponsored by Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser and the Louisiana Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism as well as the Mystick Krewe of Louisianians and the Louisiana Museum Foundation, the exhibition will remain open through September 16, 2023. |

Join Friends of the Capitol Park Museum and the Louisiana State Museum for an evening about pageantry, politics, and Mardi Gras in Louisiana
Join Friends of the Capitol Park Museum and the Louisiana State Museum for an evening about pageantry, politics, and Mardi Gras in Louisiana with Jessica Dauterive and Arthur Hardy. Dauterive will share her research on culture and pageantry, followed by a guided tour of Carnival in the Nation’s Capital: The Washington Mardi Gras Ball exhibition by Arthur Hardy.
This talk will draw from Jessica Dauterive's doctoral research on representations of Louisiana's Acadiana region and how those have been expressed through Mardi Gras, tourism, and folk festivals. Dauterive’s dissertation, “Imagining Acadiana: Cajun Identity in Modern Louisiana,” explores the shifting boundaries of Cajun identity in southwest Louisiana from the 1930s to the 1970s.
The exhibition Carnival in the Nation’s Capital features royal regalia, costumes, photographs, posters, and memorabilia.
According to carnival expert Arthur Hardy, the Mystick Krewe of Louisianians, which sponsors the ball, is a key player in the “pantheon of Carnival organizations in the state. The beautiful and comprehensive exhibit currently running at the Capitol Park Museum in Baton Rouge is a tribute to the 75-year history of this important and vibrant organization which, since its founding, has been led by political leaders from Louisiana who have brought the state’s signature event to the nation’s capital.”
About the Presenters
Jessica Dauterive is a Ph.D. candidate in history at George Mason University. She focuses on twentieth-century U.S. history with concentrations in cultural, digital, and public history. Her dissertation will explore the development of twentieth-century Cajun identity through tools of mass culture, including records, radio, television, tourism, and folk festivals.
Arthur Hardy has been featured in magazines, books, radio, and television, including the Today Show and National GeographicA 1970 graduate of Loyola University, he taught in the public school system for three years, then went on to become band director at Brother Martin High School. Seeing the need for more detailed information about Mardi Gras parades, he began publishing Arthur Hardy's Mardi Gras Guide in 1977. The annual publication remains indispensable for carnival aficionados.
Capitol Park Museum admission is $7.00 for adults; $6.00 for students with I.D., senior citizens (65+) and members of the military. School groups with reservations and children 6 and under are admitted free. Join the Nous Foundation and the Friends of the Capitol Park Museum for a free, intimate performance with singer/ songwriter Dustin Gaspard showcasing his vocal talents and journey with French. A special thanks to our champagne sponsor, Dark 30.
Dustin Dale Gaspard hails from the rural southern community of Cow Island Louisiana, a landscape of mysterious rich marshland, ancient shrouding oak trees, and dream inducing nights/ days. The open pastures, whispering cane fields, and smothering earth tones offer him a creative canvas to color with the soundscape of his original music. His Atmospheric and cryptic tunes are influenced by the land that raised him. Having been a self taught guitarist and lyricist, much of his music is reflected by his childhood experiences, memories and dreams of his home. He was raised on vintage 50s/ 60s soul/ swamp pop, plus other traditional folk sounds from his area and an appreciation for acoustic instrumentation. Combining his love for poetry and respect for many intimate singer songwriters, his inventive musical perspective was born.
