1573452000 Family Events Transit of Mercury Viewing BREC November 11, 2019 November 11, 2019 6:00 AM 2:00 PM A transit of Mercury will take place on Veterans Day, November 11, 2019. This will be the LAST transit of Mercury to occur for 13 years, or until 2032! A “transit” is the phenomenon of viewing a smaller body crossing in front of a larger one. On 9 May, for the first time in nine-and-a-half years, the disk of Mercury will traverse the disk of the Sun. A Transit of Mercury is not visible to the unaided eye. At least 30x magnification is needed to easily see the phenomenon. Several telescopes (at least six) will be in operation on HRPO grounds. HRPO will be open for the duration of the event. The Sun will actually be rising here in Baton Rouge as the transit gets started! **As with standard solar viewing, extreme precaution should be taken when attempting direct viewing of a transit. One should not attempt direct viewing of the Sun—ever—unless one is absolutely sure all safety guidelines are followed. During the scooting at the park clinic we teach you how to ride scooters at the skatepark. During this hour, an experienced and well-trained instructor will guide riders through the essential skills of park riding such as etiquette, riding transition, and several other basic scooter tricks. This clinic is open to riding at any skill level. Our instructors meet the rider where they’re at and will be there to guide riders with both general and specific issues they may be having. The Recreation and Park Commission for the Parish of East Baton Rouge was created in 1946 as a political subdivision of the state of Louisiana to serve the citizens of East Baton Rouge Parish. BREC - a representative name of who we serve and what we do - has developed, maintained, and operated public park and recreational facilities for over 70 years.
BREC was among the first park agencies to earn national accreditation and recently earned reaccreditation for an unprecedented fifth time, meeting all 144 standards. BREC is a two-time National Gold Medal Award winner and 13-time national finalist.
