Museums are monuments to wonder, exploration, and discovery. The objects found within their galleries bring to life the stories of the past, today, and those not yet written. These objects may be ancient artifacts, fine oil paintings, stone sculptures, or even items that beg the question, “what is art?” Each of these examples and many more are found in the permanent collection of the Louisiana Art & Science Museum. LASM has been a collecting institution since its founding in 1962. The growth of the collection has been guided by the dedicated service of members of the Board of Trustees, particularly the Board Collections Committee, and the tireless efforts of the staff. The over 4,000 objects in the permanent collection have come to our care through generous donations, bequests, and thoughtful purchases. It is the responsibility of the Museum to preserve these items and to tell their story. Organized into distinct categories - 19th Century Art; Modern Art; Contemporary Art; Folk Art, Self-Taught Art, and Craft Art; and Baton Rouge Art - and featuring works by Louisiana-born and Louisiana-based artists including Conrad Albrizio, John James Audubon, Fritz Bultman, Elizabeth Catlett, Michael Crespo, Caroline Durieux, Lin Emery, Knute Heldner, Ida Kohlmeyer, Paul Ninas, Edward Pramuk, Hunt Slonem, and Margaret Stones, this exhibition illustrates the evolution of art in Louisiana through the Museum’s collection. The artists whose work is on view were inspired by the landscape, people, and culture that is uniquely “Our Louisiana.” We will be rotating pieces in January of 2022 and January 2023.
